In 2005 we began the search for a good hardy breed to expand our cow herd
which would withstand the winters and were good foragers, along with the shorthorns.
This was the start of our love for the Belted Galloway breed...
Our first stock bull Coulmony Coll bred us tremendous bulls which we have had great success with over the years. We have Cairnsmore Jamie who was bred by Coll, this bull was sent to Germany where he won when on show at the green week national show in Berlin and a daughter of his, won Berlin green week national show again in 2014. Another Champion bull bred by Coll was Cairnsmore Domino who was champion at stranraer and Dumfries show in 2011, he was bought by a Mrs Anne Bell for 4000 gns also that same year Cairnsmore Duke was junior champion at the royal highland show. Another junior champion at the highland show was cairnsmore Fan Dandy who was also bred by Coulmony Coll.
Over the years the Belted Galloway breed have been very good to us and to pay back the society we decided to have an open day not only to show off our herd but to raise money and to allow more people to get interested in the breed. The Open day was a great success with over 100 people attending.
Also, with belties being so unusual and unique we had an author of children’s books keen to write about our belted Galloways. This lead us to Wigtown book festival where we took a young beltie calf to promote the book. There has never been a dull moment with Belted Galloways especially with tourists who simply can’t leave the area without getting a glimpse of one.
